Description

You are invited to join an engaging discussion about routine male infant circumcision. Guest speaker Ryan McAllister, PhD will lead the evening with his talk "Circumcision: an Elephant in the Hospital" and help facilitate an open Q&A with local clinicians following his presentation. Ryan is research faculty at Georgetown University in biophysics and coordinator of NotJustSkin.org. His focus: science, anthropology, and bioethics of birth, obstetrics, and parenting. His talk addresses the historical, cultural, and political roots of routine circumcision in the United States as well as currently available public health data.

In addtion to being nationally recognized for his eloquent academic and grassroots work on this topic, Ryan is a gentle and approachable resource who has graciously agreed to visit the Twin Cities to help lead our event.

Sam Pace, MD (Obstetrics) and Micah Johnson, MD (Family Medicine) will help answer any clinical questions about infant circumcision following Ryan's presentation.

We welcome all levels of understanding and interest in this topic, whether it is the first time you've thought about male circumcision or if you consider yourself an activist / "Intactivist." Similarly, we aim to have a rich enviornment of different kinds of folks for the discussion: parents, clinicians, educators, doulas, and any other interested parties.

This event is a fundraiser for a documentary film (in-progress) about circumcusion, produced by local nurse-midwives Emily Rumsey and Emily Fitzgerald. Tickets are pay-as-you-can, suggested donation $20.

Wine and light refreshments will be served. The presentation will be videotaped for academic use.

Come enjoy the beautiful gathering space at Everyday Miracles with old and new friends!
